Summary of the Film:
Phase Gaye Re Obama is a comedy set against the backdrop of a global recession that originated in the USA. The film traces the journey of Om Shastri, an American citizen of Indian origin, who loses all his wealth overnight to the recession & has been asked to vacate his home unless he pays the bank the mortgaged amount of $100,000 within 30 days. With no other option, Om comes to India to sell a small piece of an ancestral property. However, within days of his arrival, he is kidnapped by a 'recession-hit' underworld gang, the members of which think that he is still a millionaire. What happens to Om? Is he able to save his home? How did the poor gangsters cope with their poor catch & what do small town Indian gangsters have to say to President Obama? The film showcases how global meltdowns impact all lives—from an America-based businessman to underworld dons in the dusty plains of a small town in India.

Before turning director, Subhash Kapoor, as a journalist, toured North India extensively, and it is reflected in the dialect that the characters speak.This was the reason he opted for kidnapping as the "industry" that got affected by recession. Kidnapping has become an industry in the region and often the characters involved in action have a humorous take on life.
